Optimized Storage: Making Space Before You Run Out of Room

As users of macOS Sierra, we often find ourselves running low on storage space. Google gives us a generous 15GB of free Google Drive space, while Dropbox offers only 2GB. It's no wonder that Apple hasn't raised the free entry-level tier from 5GB to a higher amount yet. Throughout the operating system, macOS Sierra primes the pump for users to save more files than ever to iCloud.

With this change, you can email documents left on your desktop at home and access them easily while on the go. This means you can quickly open images saved on your desktop in Instagram and share any files without worrying about compatibility issues. iCloud Desktop and Document upload all files that are saved to those directories, not just those that can be used on iOS.

In exchange for this slightly confusing change, all files stored in both directories can be accessed from the same directories on all macOS Sierra Macs and the iCloud Drive app on all iPhones and iPads. Once you enable iCloud Desktop and Documents, those folders are stored under iCloud, not in the user directory. If you leave that checkbox enabled, prepare for a slightly different-looking operating system and a whole lot of convenience.

For instance, I found myself using Universal Clipboard more frequently, which allowed me to copy text from one device and paste it on another seamlessly. With the installation of macOS Sierra, the operating system prompts users if they want to store files from Documents and Desktop in iCloud Drive. This feature has made my work much smoother and efficient.

However, I did encounter a few issues with Siri. For instance, when I asked it to 'decrease the screen brightness,' it didn't respond as expected. But after asking Siri to 'lower the screen brightness,' it complied. It's clear that Siri sometimes needs users to use specific language, but I'm hoping these bugs will be ironed out after its wider release.

Despite a few hiccups, I found that Siri understands contextual follow-up questions and can provide useful results. For example, when I asked it to 'search the web for photos of cute dogs,' not only could I pin those results for later, but I could also drag and drop the images onto my desktop.

Overall, macOS Sierra has made significant strides in providing users with more storage space and convenience features. With a little tweaking and fine-tuning, Siri has the potential to become an even more powerful tool for Mac users. For now, it's clear that Apple is committed to improving its operating system and providing users with the best possible experience.
